a new opinion in Photography about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510

I bought this camera for my birthday in Nov, I gave it untold thoughtfulness and decided on a Sony purely for its marque. I initiate this camera really deltoid to use and slenderize and versatile for fittinginto any pocket. The shelling life was complete and the telephoto feature a attribute to its firewood viewing thought to the diabled somebody.
The heartbeat is rattling grand, beady at all present and producing both virtuous images. Nevertheless this is also a disfavour. It sometimes creates over danger. The intermission when you hump a ikon is also preventive. There is a 1-2 endorsement dleay in when it takes the image from when you exhort the switch.
Boilersuit, the camera is peachy for movement but not large in the caliber it produces and to be genuine there are many cheaper and improve character cameras available. Dissatisfactory for a brand such as this one with specified a proper estimation. Zilch unscheduled

Summary: A Nice Camera in the Sony cyber shot series.

Digital Trends Best of 2011 Awards: Tablets and E-Readers (Digital Trends)

Digital-Trends-Best-of-2011-Awards-Tablets-and-eReadersThe iPad may have launched in 2010, but 2011 was a big year for tablets. Almost every major smartphone and PC manufacturer has joined the tablet party Apple started, beginning with the Motorola Xoom way back in February. To combat Apple on new territory, most companies turned to Google and its fledgling tablet OS, Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Results were mixed, with some great and innovative devices coming out, padded by more iPad clones than you can shake a stick at. Until late 2011, no manufacturer seemed to be capable of beating Apple?s $500 price by a significant enough margin to make much headway. If you?re going to choose an iPad knockoff, it better be a lot cheaper. That?s where Amazon came in. Despite most people suspecting the death of the e-reader in the face of the iPad, Kindle sales continued to surge, prompting Amazon to launch its own tablet, the Kindle Fire for a new low price of $200.

Some of this year?s biggest losers were tablets as well. RIM?s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and HP?s TouchPad tablet both attempted to enter the market but were greeted with little interest from buyers. HP didn?t take the rejection well, momentarily announcing a complete shut down of WebOS and a potential sell-off of its entire PC division (its CEO was fired and this decision was reversed). Both companies didn?t see any traction with their tablets until they were discounted to rock-bottom prices of $100-$200. But that?s enough about them. Let?s get on to this year?s big winners.?

Make sure to check the rest of our Best of 2011 Awards?to see all of this year?s winners.

Tablets

apple-ipad-2Apple iPad 2, $500 and up

The iPad 2 is the standard for all things tablet. Microsoft may have invented the tablet PC years ago, but Apple reinvented it as a relevant compliment to a PC and smartphone. The iPad 2 is still arguably the best tablet on the market, with a superthin aluminum frame, 9.7-inch screen with a paper-like aspect ratio of 4:3. And because Apple required all developers to make custom apps for the iPad, the market is full of apps that are custom built for Apple?s tablet. Android users currently aren?t so lucky. The iPad also still has that responsiveness and ease of use that Android Honeycomb doesn?t quite have. We?ve seen and heard about many older Americans who generally avoid PCs being delighted with the iPad and using it for all sorts of things. If you want a solid buy that you know you?ll enjoy, the iPad 2 is the best bet.

samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9, $450 and up

Samsung has made a good living by mimicking Apple (proof), and its Galaxy Tab series tries its best to be every bit as good as the iPad is. Out of the three Galaxy Tab sizes, we like the 8.9-inch screen the best. While most Android tablets sport small 7-inch screens or large 10.1-inch screens, the 8.9-inch size is a great middle ground. We found that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 was small enough (and thin enough) for easy thumb typing but large enough to use full-screen applications and do full web browsing. While we don?t always love how manufacturers customize Android, Samsung?s TouchWiz interface is a nice improvement over the stock Android Honeycomb tablet experience. If you have the money and don?t want an iPad, the Tab 8.9 is a great option.

amazon-kindle-fireAmazon Kindle Fire, $200

Amazon dropped a bomb when it announced the Kindle Fire. The hardware isn?t impressive, lacking cameras, hosting minimal RAM, and sporting a rather dull design borrowed from the BlackBerry PlayBook, but the price tag makes up for it. At a scant $200, the Kindle Fire is the first tablet that almost anyone can justify buying. More impressive is Amazon?s interface, which takes Android and completely reworks it into a unique Amazon experience. Unlike other tablets, Amazon?s interface is simple and explains exactly what the Kindle Fire is good for: news, books, music, video, docs, apps, and web browsing. If you?re an Android enthusiast, the Kindle Fire may not be for you, as it only connects up to Amazon?s own app and content stores, but we happen to like a lot of what Amazon offers. It?s a bit clunky and not the best tablet you?ll ever own, but the Kindle Fire is a solid choice for those on a budget.?

asus-transformer-prime-frontAsus Eee Pad Transformer Prime (with Keyboard dock), $650

Almost every tablet manufacturer this year opted to mimic the iPad. Asus was different. With its Eee Pad tablets, the PC manufacturer tried something new. The Eee Pad Transformer is a thin, capable Android tablet that docks into a keyboard, turning the Android tablet into an effective netbook. Better, the dock has a battery in it too, boosting battery life to an astounding 18+ hours. The Transformer Prime, just launched in December, is an upgraded version of this tablet, with a thinner profile, more RAM, and a quad-core processor, meaning it really can act as a netbook. Other tablets by Asus, like the Eee Pad Slider and another tablet that you can dock a phone into, are innovative and interesting. The market has responded too. While other tablet manufacturers saw consumer interest fade over the course of the year, the Transformer continued to sell out, exceeding demand. +1 for a good idea, Asus. We look forward to seeing what the company has in store for 2012.?

E-Readers

kindle-touchAmazon Kindle Touch, $100

The Kindle is the most popular E-reader on the market and for good reason: it?s arguably the best. Amazon?s e-book store is substantial and the new $100 price and addition of touch makes this e-reader affordable for almost anyone. Like the Nook Simple Touch (see below), the Kindle Touch uses an infra-red sensor net to detect touch while retaining the incredible battery life afforded by the e-ink screen. Two-month battery life ain?t bad. The new Kindle Touch can also hold about 3,000 books and has a new ?X-Ray? feature that lets you look up things on Wikipedia or search through the book.?
?

barnes-noble-nook-simple-touchBarnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch, $100

While people like to credit Amazon a lot, Barnes & Noble has been leading the e-book field for some time. The Nook Color was basically an early Kindle Fire and the Nook Simple Touch came out months before Amazon?s touch-based Kindle. There isn?t a huge difference between the Nook Touch and Kindle Touch. They?re both solid e-readers and their book libraries are both fairly vast. The difference is that if you live by a B&N store, you can read books inside the store and get free technical support anytime you wish, a luxury Amazon fans do not have. We haven?t done a side-by-side comparison, but the Nook Simple Touch screen seems a bit more responsive than the Kindle Touch. The price is the same as Amazon?s tablet, there are no ads on the Nook (there are on Kindles), and the battery life is equally, if not more awesome than the Kindle. Do not feel ashamed picking a Nook.?

Press the Escape Key to Generate Spelling Suggestions in Mac OS X [Video]

Press the Escape Key to Generate Spelling Suggestions in Mac OS X When you're typing a word you don't know or remember how to spell, you can quickly get a list of suggestions by pressing the escape key in most OS X text editors. Just type as much of the word as you know, press escape, and OS X will offer up as many possibilities as it knows. You can look through the list and find what you want, quickly, without the need to use your mouse or bother with multiple keystrokes. Check out the video above for a demonstration.

Note: This feature requires Mac OS X Lion, and doesn't work in every application. It must be supported by the application you're using, which at the time is mostly word processing apps like TextEdit.

U.S. to Pay Family $17.8M for Military Jet Crash

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the U.S. government to pay $17.8 million to a family that lost four members when a Marine Corps fighter jet crashed into their San Diego home in 2008.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Miller's ruling came after a nonjury trial between the Department of Justice and the family, who sought $56 million for emotional and monetary loss. The Marine Corps blamed the crash on a mechanical failure and human errors.

The case was unique in that the government admitted liability but disputed how much should be paid to Don Yoon and his extended family. Government lawyers had put economic losses at about $1 million but left it up to Miller to decide how much should be paid for the emotional loss.

Don Yoon lost his 36-year-old wife, Youngmi Lee Yoon; his 15-month-old daughter, Grace; his 2-month-old daughter, Rachel; and his 59-year-old mother-in-law, Seokim Kim Lee, who was visiting from Korea to help her eldest daughter take care of their children.

The judge said the deaths of the two girls deprived Yoon of "the comfort, companionship, society and love a young child is capable of providing to a new parent and, then, in later life. By all accounts, the Yoon girls would have been raised with traditional cultural and family values emphasizing love and devotion to parents and family."

He ordered Yoon to be awarded nearly $10 million, and his father-in-law to be given nearly $4 million. The rest should go to the father-in-law's three adult children for the loss of their mother, Seokim Kim Lee.

Miller called her an extraordinary woman after hearing the testimonies of her husband and children, who flew in from Korea to testify at the trial.

The family's attorney, Brian Panish, said he found the amount "fair and just." Department of Justice attorneys could not be immediately reached for comment.

The Marine Corps has said the plane suffered a mechanical failure but a series of bad decisions led the pilot -- a student -- to bypass a potentially safe landing at a coastal Navy base after his engine failed on Dec. 8, 2008. Low oil pressure killed the jet's first engine, and the second died when fuel stopped flowing from the tank.

The military disciplined 13 members of the Marines and the Navy for the errors. The pilot ejected and told investigators he screamed in horror as he watched the jet plow into the neighborhood, incinerating two homes.

Yoon broke down crying throughout his testimony, which came three years to the day when he buried his wife and baby girls in the same casket. Yoon told the judge he only looks forward to the day when he can join them again.

"The family is happy that this part of the process is over, but they've lost so much that they will never get back," Panish said.

Jetstar Reveals Growth Plans for New Japan Venture

Jetstar has revealed plans to attract another partner for its new Japan venture, the Jetstar Japan, adding up to the budget airline's present investors - Japan Airlines and trading firm Mitsubishi.

As part of Qantas', Jetstar's mother company, restructuring efforts for its ailing international services, Jetstar Japan is seen by the airline to beef up its regional strategy with focused on servicing flights within the world's third biggest economy.

Jetstar chief executive Bruce Buchanan told The Australian that the low-cost airline is considering two locations for its operational hub - Tokyo and Kansai.

From there, Buchanan said Jetstar Japan will service flights in and out of Sapporo, Fukuoka and Okinawa, with plans of adding more destinations in the immediate future, serving as the anchor of the company's pan-Asian expansion plans.

Like us on Facebook

That growth plan, Buchanan said, is hoped to generate at least $2.5 billion in the near term.

For starters, however, Jetstar Japan needs to strengthen its current standing, which according to Buchanan carries a start-up capital of $150 million, with up to 24 aircrafts to support its initial Japanese service flights.

Jetstar has scheduled for flights to commence by the last quarter of 2012, with a specific target of generating $1 billion in total revenues over the next two years, The Australian wrote.

To ensure greater success for the new Qantas investment, Jetstar is looking for another investor that will be given half the 16 percent stakes currently maintained by Mitsubishi.

This fourth entity, Buchanan said, will enjoy equal voting rights with Jetstar, Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi.

Transactions have already commenced and barring any major glitches, a deal could be struck early next year, Buchanan said.

"It is not too far away. Once we knuckle through things, it will be three to four months," the Jetstar chief was quoted by The Australian as saying in hinting the possibility of a closed deal by early 2012.

"There are quite a few interested parties up there. It is a great time to get in at this stage for what we think will be an exciting opportunity. We want to ensure that the partner we bring on brings maximum strategic advantage for the business," Buchanan added.

Frogs use calls to find mates with matching chromosomes

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? When it comes to love songs, female tree frogs are pretty picky. According to a new study from the University of Missouri, certain female tree frogs may be remarkably attuned to the songs of mates who share the same number of chromosomes as they do. The discovery offers insight into how new frog species may have evolved.

Carl Gerhardt, Curators Professor of Biological Sciences in the MU College of Arts and Science and doctoral student Mitch Tucker studied two closely related species of grey tree frogs that live in Missouri, the eastern grey tree frog (Hyla versicolor) and the Cope's grey tree frog (H. chrysoscelis).

"To the naked eye -- human and frog -- the two frogs look exactly alike," Gerhardt said. "The frogs differ only in the number of chromosomes. The eastern grey tree frog has double the number of chromosomes."

To the ears of potential mates, the two species differ in their vocal performances.

"The males are both singing the same love song -- just one frog is singing it slower. It's kind of like the difference between Eric Clapton's original and unplugged versions of Layla," Tucker said.

In previous studies, the scientists found that tree frogs with more sets of chromosome have larger cell sizes, which slows down the trill rate. What was not known was whether the calling preferences of females are similarly linked to chromosome number.

To answer this question, Tucker simulated the chromosome duplication event by replicating spring temperatures early in the frog development. Females were grown to maturity and then exposed to computer-generated, synthetic male calls that differed by trill rate. They found that the females hopped toward the calls with the trill rate of the males with matching chromosome numbers, which indicates female preference.

"This shows that chromosome number alone can control the behavior that keeps the species separate," Gerhardt said. "In turn, as chromosome number increases, so does the size of cells, which is probably the immediate cause of the changes in calls and preferences."

In animals, the origin of species is often associated with geographic barriers. A large body of water or range of mountains, for example, splits a large population and prevents mating. The eastern grey tree frog, according to Gerhardt, may represent a rare case of rapid evolution occurring by chromosome duplication, changes in behavior and reproductive isolation.

The report, titled "Parallel changes in mate-attracting calls and female preferences in autotriploid tree frogs," was published by the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B-Biological Sciences. The study was supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the University of Missouri Research Board.

Bolivia's Morales hopes to build railway to Peru (AP)

LIMA, Peru ? Bolivia's president said Monday that he hopes to build a new railway linking his country to Peru that would facilitate exports to Asia.

Bolivian President Evo Morales said he has discussed the plan with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala. Morales told the Peruvian radio station RPP that the railway would run from Puerto Suarez, on Bolivia's border with Brazil, to the Pacific port of Ilo in Peru.

"It's my great dream," Morales said, adding that Brazil and Peru would also gain from having a railway link. He said it would carry agricultural products as well as other commodities to Asian countries.

Morales said in August after a visit to China that Chinese officials expressed interest in making the railway project a priority. It's not immediately clear how much the railway would cost, or how much financial support China might provide.

Bolivia and Peru currently export minerals to China including zinc and lead. Bolivia currently uses roads to truck shipments to Pacific ports in Chile.

Morales made the remarks Monday in the Peruvian city of Cusco, where he spent Christmas after meeting with Peru's president.

Humala also reiterated his support last week for Bolivia in its long-standing request that Chile provide the landlocked country with a corridor of land to access the Pacific coast.

Why You Should Study Washington Long Term Care Insurance

Long term care insurance is a very common term in Washington nowadays as most people here are either buying it or thinking of buying one to hedge the high cost of care. It is not wise, however, to jump at the first policy that is offered to you, as each company that sells Washington long term care insurance has its own unique underwriting.

There is no doubting the efficacy of a long term care insurance (LTCI) policy as it happens to be the only product which guarantees access to quality care and financial protection. No wonder many people are considering it but only few of them have actually purchased a policy because the majority of Americans are scared that they might not be able to maintain the annual premium.

It?s true that in the past there have been cases of lapsed LTCI policies due to the failure of maintaining the annual premiums. However prevalent, this should not be a reason to discourage people from clinching their personalized LTCI policy. Always heed the advice of the experts which is to identify your health care needs first before buying a policy. One more thing that you should not ignore is the fine print of a potential LTCI policy as this usually contains the allowable benefit triggers.

If you are a resident of Washington, you have to be more agitated with the state?s cost of long term care (LTC) rather than the price of an LTCI policy as the former is increasing at a speedy rate.

Washington Long Term Care Insurance vs. Long Term Care Costs

According to Genworth Financial?s 2011 Cost of Care Survey, Washingtonians with family members in nursing homes have to fork out $85,712 annually for a private room. Semi-private rooms, on the other hand, cost $220 per day or $81,843 per annum.

Meanwhile, the monthly rate of an assisted living facility in Washington is $4,000, on average, but in the Seattle area people pay as much as $4,250 for a one-bedroom facility.

After a year of paying for a loved one?s LTC needs out-of-pocket, that?s when these residents will notice how their nest egg has dwindled so fast.

Avoid being a burden to the ones you love by starting a good plan that will ensure you of the best LTC services someday while protecting your assets.

Invest in a comprehensive LTCI policy which will provide you with full or partial LTC coverage. Your objective in purchasing a policy is, after all, to avoid paying the total expenses that you could possibly incur in a nursing home, assisted living facility, or at home. Get long term care quotes .

What?s paying an annual premium worth $1,500 or $1,700 if the total benefits that you could receive someday would amount to $500,000 given the rate of inflation protection that is provided by your policy?

Except for the air we breathe, there is no other free item in this world that is better than one which is paid for. Leave Medicaid to the poor and take time to study a Washington long term care insurance policy with a licensed LTCI representative in your area.

NBA Commissioner David Stern opens season hearing boos from fans in Dallas

DALLAS - NBA Commissioner David Stern opened his lockout-delayed season by hearing boos from fans.

Stern was in Dallas for the NBA finals rematch between the Mavericks and Heat, and he was on the court for the start of the Mavs' banner-raising ceremony honoring their first championship. The jeers came as soon as he started speaking, but he quickly turned them into cheers by offering his congratulations to team owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban's often contentious relationship with Stern could've been as much of a reason for the boos as the lockout, which pushed the opener from Nov. 1 to Christmas and cut the season by 16 games.

Cuban and Miami's Mickey Arison were among five owners who voted against the labor deal. Stern downplayed that, hailing the agreement as beneficial to everyone.

Francis Nigel Lee died on December 23 in Australia. He was 77 years old. He was as widely read a man as I have ever known, and I have known some famous ones. He earned multiple doctorates. His great book is a 1,300-page book, Communist Eschatology (1974). He wrote many others. Here is a brief selection of his writings. http://www.dr-fnlee.org.

He wrote what I regard as the most remarkable personal testimony that I have ever read. I reprint it here as a tribute, but also as a document suitable for the Christmas season. If someone asks me, "What is Christianity, and what practical difference does it make?" I refer him to this.

The Sovereignty of God in the Salvation of My Father's Slayer

In April 1994, I was invited to fly round the world and expound the Lord's Prayer in the U. S. A. during September. Having acquired the plane ticket, as an only child I was much looking forward to visiting my parents in Barrydale (near Swellendam in South Africa) on my way from Australia to America.

However, in July 1994, my father (almost 86) was robbed and left for dead in his home. My mother (having lost her mind and the use of some of her bodily functions) was permanently hospitalised. One week after being assaulted, my father died in hospital and went to be with the Lord.

Upon my arrival in South Africa in September, I headed for Swellendam (where my mother is still in hospital). There, I was amazed that the police had apprehended a young man in connection with the death of my father, and that the young man had signed a statement alleging that he alone had attacked my father. I also learned that my father, before dying, had given a description to the police of the young man (which description is altogether in harmony with the appearance of the accused) and that the latter was being held in jail precisely in Swellendam, while awaiting his preliminary trial just one week after my own arrival there.

I immediately contacted the jail, requesting permission to come and speak to the accused (of whom it is alleged that he had killed also someone else even before attacking my father). The police warmly supported my request, but informed me the accused had the right to refuse to see me. He, however, being told who I was, agreed and even requested to meet with me.

On the 15th of September I went to the jail, where I was told to surrender my camera and tape-recorder and any firearms I may have been carrying. I was escorted to a room where three armed policemen and their officer were doing clerical work. One minute later, the accused was brought through the door into the room and stood there in front of me.

He was a strongly-built medium-sized man, answering exactly to the description given by my father to the police. He stood there, just looking down at the ground. I silently prayed to God for guidance as to what to do next. Then I got up from my chair; addressed him politely by his full name; greeted him with a handshake; thanked him sincerely for granting me the interview; and requesting him to sit down before I again did so.

I then said: "Mr. W., are you getting enough to eat here?" He replied: "Yes, thank you." I said: "Have you peace of mind here?" He replied: "Sir, I am very unhappy. I have been praying to God in my cell for the last three nights, but it's as if my prayers bounce back off the ceiling and don't get through."

I then said: "Mr. W., I am the only child of the old man who was left for dead behind the front door of his house in Barrydale on the 10th of July whom you are accused of having assaulted. I had been looking forward to spending a week with him in September, but as you can see this is now impossible." The young man nodded; looked down; and said nothing.

I then continued: "Mr. W., my father was not a Christian many years ago, but there came a time in his life when he turned from his sins and received Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. That is why he is now in heaven, and waiting for me to join him.

"I assure you Mr. W., that if you make your peace with God -- whether you die right now of a heart attack; or are to be put to death for murder; or die naturally later on -- you too will go to heaven. I also assure you that my father, whom you are accused of having murdered, will then be the first to welcome you there. However, Mr. W., if you do not repent and if you die in your sins, I assure you that you will spend eternity in hell-fire and damnation forever!

"Mr. W., whether you repent and become a Christian, or you harden yourself and die in your sins, know for sure that if found guilty by the court I would want you to receive the maximum penalty.

"I will plead no leniency whatsoever for you, even if you become a Christian, but I am offering you everlasting life in heaven after you die, if you will repent and come to Jesus.

"Mr. W., three men died on a little hill called Calvary. Two were guilty robbers; but the One in the middle, the Lord Jesus, was innocent. Robbers, as you know, include those who go around beating up old people and leaving them for dead after stealing from them. Both of those robbers jeered at the innocent Jesus crucified between them.

"But then one of the robbers repented, turned to the other, and said: 'We are being condemned justly. For we are receiving the punishment due, for our deeds. But this man (Jesus) has done nothing amiss!' Then the penitent robber said to Jesus: 'Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom!' So Jesus said: 'Truly, I tell you, today you shall be with me in paradise!'

"Mr. W., do you not see yourself as one of those two robbers next to Jesus on Calvary? Will you die in your sins and go to hell like the impenitent robber? Or will you, like the other robber, repent of your sins; receive Jesus as your Lord; and be assured by Him that you will go to heaven when you die?

"Mr. W., if you wish, I will leave this jail right now. But if you prefer, I would be privileged to show you right now how you too can become a Christian. Which is it to be?"

Mr. W. then tried to look in my eye. He said: "Sir, would you please show me how to become a Christian?" I then realised that the four policemen in the room had all put down their pens; had stopped working; and were straining their ears, listening to us. So I said: "Officer, could you kindly get us a Bible?"

The officer went galloping out of the room, and immediately returned with a Bible and put it on my lap with great respect. I opened it at John 3:16, and asked Mr. W. if he could read. When he so indicated, I handed him the Bible, and asked him to read it. Loudly and clearly, he read it out, and then said: "I am too big a sinner!" But I replied: "Mr. W., it says here: 'whosoever'; and that includes you too, if and when you put your trust in Jesus."

The atmosphere was electric. All in that room felt the awesome presence of God the Holy Ghost. The silence was terrifying. Then I said: "Mr. W., will you come to Jesus?" He replied: "I will!"

So, two wicked hell-deserving sinners Rev. Prof. Dr. Nigel Lee and his father's slayer Mr. W., then went down on their knees in that jail together. I put my arm around his shoulder, and prayed first. I thanked God for our meeting; (re)confessed all my own fresh sins to the Lord; and then asked Him to have mercy on Mr. W., for Christ's sake.

Mr. W. then prayed. He said: "Lord, I'm a miserable sinner! Please don't let Satan destroy me! I am sorry for all my sins. Forgive me, for the sake of Jesus who died for people like me!"

We then got off our knees. I assured him: "Mr. W., if you really meant that, you are now my brother. In that case, here is my right hand of fellowship. I will help you in any way I can. Here is my address in Australia. If you write to me, I promise to reply to every letter you may write, for the rest of my life. When is your trial?"

He replied: "Thursday 22nd September." I promised to pray for him on that day (when I would be overseas), that justice would be done and that he would continue to receive God's grace whatever the outcome. I then again shook his hand and left the jail to the astonishment of both the grateful police and the bewildered convicts there who just kept on staring at me in amazement.

Driving back to Barrydale, I praised God and sang His Psalms the whole time -- realizing anew that God is not dead but very much alive on this great planet earth. For God had revived my soul -- and, I trust, those of all in that room in the jail.

Four days later, I visited the jail again. This time Mr. W. was waiting for me with a smile. He had been reading the Bible since I last saw him, and claimed to have peace. I urged him to speak to the other prisoners about what had happened to him; to tell the full truth at his trial.

I also urged him to work and witness for the Lord for the rest of his earthly life (be it short or long). He then prayed for both of us; thanked God for my visits; and boldly asked the Lord to bless me wherever I went (that same day to England, and thereafter to America).

God heard his prayer. In London, the Lord spoke powerfully even through my there relating the above events. In America, the effect was electrifying, and the tape-recording of my account is spreading like wildfire and producing awesome enquires and results. I used it there, as an illustration, while preaching on the fifth petition in the Lord's Prayer: "And forgive men their debts, as we forgive our debtors!"

My fellow sinner, how stands it with your soul? Are you certain you are right with God for time and eternity? For Jesus assures us: "If you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses!"

O that God would melt the heavens and come down, and touch and revive His hard-nosed children here on earth! Do you have the certainty that all your sins have been forgiven, for Christ's sake? If not, settle this matter forthwith!

Sincerely in the Lord's service, from a sinner saved by grace

Hackers! Embellishment! The Inside Story of the Facebook Movie

create a forum where everyone can share their own personal stories, then have the government connect the dots to implicate us all-for being so honest.- Make us feel safe, with homeland security- then turn the whole place into a wall to wall prison camp. America needs martyrs Uncle Sam wants YOU!

I actually watched this movie last week and its great to see how viral something can go. It brought up lots of ideas for me, he should be really proud of what he achieved!! I guess everyone wants to bein his live if you really live your dreams, like me and my spouse who started a website called

But guys, I prefer to do that in front of a whiteboard or a coffee machine? Informal discussions with *real* people does blast the twitter/facebook buzz

I know this is suposto make me sympathize with Mark Zuckerburg, but honestly how many people feel ?bad? for him. I sure as s*** don?t. That is why I hate stories/celebrities who play the sympathy card about how ?hard? its is bulls*** you made your bed of lavish luxery, and should be proud as hell. Instead your complaining because you want a change of sheets. I will totally sympathize with you Mark once you throw 10mil my way so I can start my own damn company.

I know the name zuckerberg, but I have no clue what he looks like cause, who cares? Facebook is famous, but I don?t know if this guy is going to get Gates famous for a website.

??Mark Zuckerberg will become the first tech nerd to be granted Hollywood celebrity?? No shit. He?s Jewish and Hollywood?s run by Jews. BTW, he?s not the first nerd to get the hollywood treatment. Remember ?Pirates of Silicon Valley? about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs? Also Jews? Hollywood Jewish propaganda at work!

First tech nerd to be granted Hollywood celebrity? If granting celebrity means ?making a movie about you?, as opposed to ?letting you into the parties?, there was

If this was a TNT movie I?d watch it without reservation. But in the theater? Watching this movie at a theater is gonna be like watching porn: We do it, but we don?t mention it the next day.

Wow, comparing Zuckerberg and Facebook to Hearst and his newspapers. I guess since neither Citizen Kane nor The Social Network are close to reality, the historical comparisons shouldn?t be either.

?When the movie based on his college exploits and Silicon Valley conquests hits screens this fall, he?ll become the first tech nerd to be granted Hollywood celebrity.?

Wow, talk about a sperm bank of useless metaphor and pointless references to miscellaneous topics and irrelevant persons, not too dissimilar from Peter Griffin and his whopper of a tale of complete stupidity and moronic behavior as only could be followed by the nefarious minds who now regurgitate garbage onto a computer screen while wholly ignoring the aspects of journalism and review.

I never cared much for Facebook, but I?m going to have to see this just because of the director and the epic soundtrack.

?so, apart from the now-established monetary means required to persuade justin timberlake to return to his nsync hairstyle, is there anything else this film achieves other than showcase the success of a clone website of myspace??

Why do you keep saying he will be the first tech nerd in film? Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have already beat him 20 years ago.

This movie could be great. However, being a creep isn?t synonymous to being a genius or really ?special?. I do believe it?s the biggest misconception going around teens today. Actually, being a creep has dual sided benefits, its either you end up going really astray and be a loner. Or, you try to do something really worth it for the people around you.

Bees Appear to Experience Moods

Grumpy? Giddy? According to some measures, bees appear to experience moods. Image: Charles Krebs/Corbis

If you have never watched bees carefully, you are missing out. Look closely as they gently curl and uncoil their mouthparts around food, and you will sense that they are not just eating but enjoying their meal. Watch a bit more, and the hesitant flicks and sags of their antennae seem to convey some kind of emotion. Do those twitches signal annoyance? Or something like enthusiasm?

Whether bees really experience any of these emotions is an open scientific question. It is also an important one, with implications for how we should treat not just bees but the great majority of animals. Recently studies by Melissa Bateson and her colleagues at Newcastle University in England have rekindled the debate over these issues by showing that honeybees may experience something akin to moods.

Using simple behavioral tests, Bate?son?s team showed that honeybees under stress tend to be pessimistic. Other tests have demonstrated that monkeys, dogs and starlings all tend to react similarly under duress and likewise see the proverbial glass as half empty. Although this finding does not?and cannot?prove that bees experience humanlike emotions, it does give pause. We should take seriously the possibility that insects, too, have emotions.

Beeline to the Brain
First, a little bit about bees. They are members of the diverse group of animals lacking backbones?indeed, more than 95 percent of all animal species are invertebrates. Despite the varied and often nuanced behaviors they can exhibit, invertebrates are sometimes regarded as life?s second string, a mindless and unfeeling band of alien critters. If that seems somewhat melodramatic, just consider our willingness to boil some of them alive.

Those judgments tend to arise from arguments about invertebrates? failure to demonstrate the behaviors we usually associate with a pain response. Whereas the yelps and grimaces of other mammals are familiar to us as announcements of hurt, invertebrates can appear to take their injuries in stride. Insects are commonly observed using their crushed limbs with undiminished force when walking, for example, and a locust will reportedly carry on with a meal while it is being eaten by a mantis.

Other attempts to draw a dividing line between creatures that feel and those that do not are rooted in comparative brain anatomy. Invertebrates lack a cortex, an amygdala and many of the other major brain structures routinely implicated in human emotion. Their nervous systems are quite minimalist compared with ours: we have roughly 100,000 bee brains? worth of neurons in our head. Some invertebrates, however, including insects, do possess a rudimentary version of our stress response system. So the question remains: Do they experience emotion in a way that we would recognize, or do they simply react to the world with an elaborate set of reflexes?

To gain some traction on this fascinating question, Bateson?s team followed the lead of recent investigations on ?pessimistic biases? in animals. In humans, the pessimistic bias refers to our well-known tendency to perceive threats or anticipate negative outcomes more frequently when we are feeling anxious or depressed. For example, in tests where people are shown ambiguous statements such as ?the doctor examined little Emily?s growth,? anxious individuals are less likely than others to conclude that Emily is fine and only her height was being checked.

Although the link between bad moods and negative judgments may not be terribly surprising, this correlation is still useful. We rely on it in our daily lives to make informed guesses about how people are feeling by observing their actions and choices. Scientifically, we can use it to study the emotions of creatures unable to tell us directly how they feel. The key here is to set up a controlled situation where animals encounter an ambiguous stimulus?think of it as a nonverbal version of the Emily statement.

(AP) ? A Navy tradition caught up with the repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule on Wednesday when two women sailors became the first to share the coveted "first kiss" on the pier after one of them returned from 80 days at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta of Placerville, Calif., descended from the USS Oak Hill amphibious landing ship and shared a quick kiss in the rain with her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell of Los Angeles. Gaeta, 23, wore her Navy dress uniform while Snell, 22, wore a black leather jacket, scarf and blue jeans. The crowd screamed and waved flags around them.

"It's something new, that's for sure," Gaeta told reporters after the kiss.

"It's nice to be able to be myself. It's been a long time coming."

There was little to differentiate this kiss from countless others when a Navy ship pulls into its home port following a deployment. Neither the Navy nor the couple tried to draw special attention to what was happening and many onlookers waiting for their loved ones to come off the ship were busy talking among themselves.

Snell smiled as she approached Gaeta and they briefly embraced as a small contingent of local television crews and photographers, who were unaware about what was going to happen until moments earlier, captured the scene.

"She told me about the first kiss a couple of days ago and I kind of freaked out ? in a good way ? but of course I'm a little nervous, you know. But I've been waiting since she left," Snell said.

David Bauer, the commanding officer of the USS Oak Hill, said that Gaeta and Snell's kiss would largely be a non-event and the crew's reaction upon learning who was selected to have the first kiss was positive.

"It's going to happen and the crew's going to enjoy it. We're going to move on and it won't overshadow the great things that this crew has accomplished over the past three months," Bauer said.

The ship returned to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story following an 80-day deployment to Central America. The crew of more than 300 participated in exercises involving the militaries of Honduras, Guatemala Colombia and Panama as part of Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station 2012.

Both women are Navy fire controlmen, who maintain and operate weapons systems on ships. They met as roommates at training school and have been dating for two years, which they said was difficult under "don't ask, don't tell."

Repeal of the 18-year-old legal provision, under which gays could serve as long as they didn't openly acknowledge their sexual orientation, took effect in September.

"We did have to hide it a lot in the beginning," Snell said. "A lot of people were not always supportive of it in the beginning, but we can finally be honest about who we are in our relationship, so I'm happy."

Navy officials said it was the first time on record that a same-sex couple was chosen to kiss first upon a ship's return. Sailors and their loved ones bought $1 raffle tickets for the opportunity. Gaeta said she bought $50 of tickets, a figure that she said pales in comparison to amounts that some other sailors and their loved ones had bought.

The money was used to host a Christmas party for the children of sailors and Gaeta said everybody in her chain of command and on her ship supported her win in the drawing.

Snell said she believes their experience won't be the last one for gays and lesbians in the military.

"I think that it's something that is going to open a lot of doors, for not just our relationship, but all the other gay and lesbian relationships that are in the military now," she said.

Snell is based on the USS Bainbridge, the guided missile destroyer that helped rescue cargo captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in 2009.

(AP) ? Anyone with $1,000 can get on the primary ballot in New Hampshire. That made a presidential candidate forum Monday night quite a departure from the debates the major candidates have been attending. And not just because there were 17 participants.

Timothy Brewer, a Republican from Dayton, Ohio ? vowed that speaking with Jesus through "afterlife orbs" would solve the world's problems. In a thundering voice, Ed O'Donnell, a Democrat from Wilmington, Del., called for a return to "love, kindness, mercy, tolerance, friendliness, forgiveness, second chances and old-fashioned manners," and said he would outlaw all guns.

And performance artist and perennial candidate Vermin Supreme ? he yanked up his shirt to show off a scar from a kidney transplant ? made his familiar pitch for better oral hygiene.

"A country's future depends on its ability to bite back," he said.

Earnestness outweighed the absurd for most of the two-hour forum at the New Hampshire Institute of Politics at Saint Anselm College. Most of the 10 Republicans and seven Democrats said they were ordinary people motivated by the same issues that have dominated the televised debates featuring the major candidates ? from the economy and the national debt to energy and foreign policy.

"We're called the lesser-known candidates," said Christopher Hill, an airline pilot from Prospect, Ky., who called for tax reform that would let middle-class Americans keep more of their money. "Tonight, we stand for the lesser-known Americans."

Hugh Cort of Birmingham, Ala., warned that Iran is planning a nuclear attack on the United States in the very near future and called for a military strike "as soon as possible." Democrat Ed Cowan, a "writer/thinker" from Moretown, Vt., included the nuclear arms race among his list of the world's most pressing problems, but he candidly added: "Please understand, I do not have the answers. It's 'we,' not 'me,'" he said.

Likewise, Betzler Bear, a Republican from Philadelphia, paused for a bit when asked who he would pick as his running mate from among the major candidates if he won the nomination.

"I can't say I'm adequately prepared for that eventuality," he said, before naming Mitt Romney as his choice.

"There's no denying his success in business," he said. "I have a lot of confidence you could channel those skills to be a good second."

New Hampshire will hold the nation's first presidential primaries Jan. 10, with 30 Republicans and 14 Democrats from 26 states on the ballot. The number of candidates has fluctuated over the years, depending on whether an incumbent president was running. The all-time high was 1992, when there were 36 Democrats and 25 Republicans running. In 2008, there were 30 candidates, 21 Republicans and nine Democrats.

Michael Meehan of St. Louis, a real estate broker who turned to running for president when his work dried up, said he has been campaigning in New Hampshire for the last two months.

"Where else can you talk to people one on one and really get a chance to hear what people are saying?" said Meehan, a Republican.

"What if someone like me could finish in the top five?" he said. "What if we just took a chance?"

US rolling back most Libya sanctions (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration says it has rolled back most of the sanctions it issued against Libya's banks earlier this year.

The Obama administration froze assets of the Libyan government and then-leader Moammar Gadhafi and four of his children in February, shortly after shuttering the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli and evacuating staff. The move came amid escalating violence in Libya as Gadhafi sought to crush a rebellion against his rule.

The White House says the action unfreezes all government and Central Bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction. Assets in the U.S. of the Gadhafi family and former Gadhafi regime members remain frozen.

The White House says the move will let the Libyan government access most of its worldwide holdings and help with the new government's transition.

ESPN, NCAA extend deal through 2023-24 (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? ESPN and the NCAA have extended their TV rights deal through 2023-24, giving the network worldwide multi-media rights to 24 NCAA championships for various sports and exclusive international rights for men's basketball's "March Madness" tournament.

The new deal, which takes effect immediately, includes more than 600 hours of live telecasts across myriad ESPN platforms, from its flagship network to ESPN 3 to ESPN Deportes.

ABC News has reported that the deal is worth $500 million.

As it has before, ESPN will have exclusive coverage of the National Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball championship and "broad" rights to the Division I football championship, and both the men's and women's College World Series.

To reach the total of 24 championships, ESPN has added seven more sports -- women's gymnastics, men's and women's fencing, Division I women's lacrosse, Division I men's and women's outdoor track, and women's bowling.

"We have enjoyed a great relationship with the NCAA that has spanned the history of ESPN," George Bodenheimer, president, ESPN and ABC Sports, and Co-Chairman, Disney Media Networks, said in a statement. "This is our most comprehensive agreement yet and ensures sports fans will have access to top-level NCAA athletics across ESPN networks and platforms."

The NCAA helped put ESPN on the map back in the 1980s with its coverage of men's college basketball. While domestic coverage of March Madness remains a joint venture between CBS and Turner with the Final Four airing on CBS, ESPN has the exclusive international rights. It also provides comprehensive coverage of the National Invitational Tournament, the second-tier year-end championship.

ESPN has "exclusive final round coverage" of everything from Division I soccer to wrestling to lacrosse. It will also air more early round coverage in several sports.

Romney predicts tea party will turn on Gingrich (AP)

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Mitt Romney is mocking Newt Gingrich's long record in Washington and says conservative tea party voters eventually will reject the former House speaker who's Romney chief presidential rival.

Romney tells reporters in South Carolina that he thinks the state's tea party voters will turn on Gingrich because of his work for the mortgage company Freddie Mac and his consulting time in Washington.

Romney, who's been endorsed by South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, isn't sure whether the work Gingrich did after he left the House is considered lobbying. But Romney says that "when it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck."

South Carolina holds its first-in-the-South primary Jan. 21. Gingrich leads Romney in South Carolina polls and has emphasized his tea party support.

Some Kazakh oilmen avoid work after deadly clashes (Reuters)

ALMATY (Reuters) ? Some employees of KazMunaiGas Exploration Production are staying away from work because they fear for their safety after violent clashes killed at least 10 people in a western Kazakh oil city, the company said on Saturday.

London-listed KMG EP said Kazakhstan's Interior Ministry was providing armed security at key oil production facilities after the clashes on Friday, when a crowd set fire to the headquarters of its Uzenmunaigas unit in the city of Zhanaozen.

The company said in a statement it was maintaining daily oil production levels by keeping employees working round the clock.

"Some Uzenmunaigas workers failed to appear for the night shift and the morning shift on December 16 and 17," KMG EP said.

"This can be explained by the fact workers are afraid for their own security and the security of their family members."

Public protests are scarce in Kazakhstan, Central Asia's largest economy and oil producer, where President Nursultan Nazarbayev has ruled with a firm hand for more than 20 years and has overseen massive foreign investment, mainly in oil and gas.

The unusually violent clashes in Zhanaozen, a city of 90,000 people about 150 km (95 miles) inland from the Caspian Sea, marred celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence from the Soviet Union.

Sacked oil workers clashed with riot police in the city's central square. Ten people were killed and buildings and cars were set on fire, Prosecutor-General Askhat Daulbayev said.

Some KazMunaiGas EP workers began a months-long strike in May, demanding better pay and conditions. The company, which said the strikes were illegal, sacked 989 workers but sporadic protests have been held in the town since the strike ended.

New York-based Human Rights Watch said at least some mobile phone and Internet access had been shut down in Zhanaozen and called on the Kazakh government to observe "human rights norms" as they restore order.

"Without a means of communication with the outside world, people in Zhanaozen are extremely vulnerable," said Mihra Rittmann, Central Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch.

"Even in times of unrest and violence, when police restore order they should do so without using excessive force," she said in a statement.

The rights body also said around 100 people were detained and later released after a peaceful rally in the regional centre of Aktau, a larger city on the Caspian coast.

Daulbayev, the prosecutor-general, said investigators led by the interior minister had travelled to Zhanaozen on the orders of the president "to take all necessary measures to preclude further criminal acts, identify and punish organizers of the disorder and restore public security in the town."

Katy Perry's 'One That Got Away' Ties Billboard Record

Teenage Dream now has six top-five hits, tying Janet Jackson and George Michael's record.
By Jocelyn Vena

What do Katy Perry, Janet Jackson and George Michael all have in common? Well, aside from making catchy tunes, they are also the only three artists to spawn six top-five hits from a single album on the Hot 100 chart in Billboard history.

Thanks to Katy's latest Teenage Dream single, "The One That Got Away," jumping five spots from #9 to #4, she tied the two pop stars.

It's been a while since anyone matched George and Janet. Michael did it in the mid-'80s with his album Faith, which included hits like the title track, "I Want Your Sex" and "Father Figure." Jackson followed him several years later with Rhythm Nation 1814, which launched hits like "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Escapade" and "Black Cat."

This is hardly Perry's first Billboard record. She previously tied with Michael Jackson and his Bad album when she notched five #1 singles from her 2010 album. Those five chart-toppers are "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T." And now, she's set her latest record with "The One That Got Away."

"This song shows a very different side of me that I haven't shown with my past singles on this record," Perry has previously said about the Teenage Dream midtempo track. "I think that everyone can relate to this song. I wrote this song about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through. It's a bittersweet story — hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had 'The One' get away."

Another Dream megahit, "Firework," sits at #10 on MTV's Best Songs of 2011 list. Perry's inspirational dance track is joined on the list by LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now," Rihanna's "We Found Love" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," to name a few.

All this week, watch "AMTV" on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year!

BAGHDAD ? There was no "Mission Accomplished" banner. No victory parade down the center of this capital scarred and rearranged by nearly nine years of war. No crowds of cheering Iraqis grateful for liberation from Saddam Hussein.

Instead, the U.S. military officially declared an end to its mission in Iraq on Thursday with a businesslike closing ceremony behind blast walls in a fortified compound at Baghdad airport. The flag used by U.S. forces in Iraq was lowered and boxed up in a 45-minute ceremony. No senior Iraqi political figures attended.

With that, and brief words from top American officials who flew in under tight security still necessary because of the ongoing violence in Iraq, the U.S. drew the curtain on a war that left 4,500 Americans and more than 100,000 Iraqis dead.

The conflict also left another 32,000 Americans and far more Iraqis wounded, drained more than $800 billion from America's treasury and soured a majority of Americans on a war many initially supported as a just extension of the fight against terrorism after the 9/11 attacks.

As the last troops withdraw from Iraq, they leave behind a nation free of Saddam's tyranny but fractured by violence and fearful of the future. Bombings and gun battles are still common. And experts are concerned about the Iraqi security forces' ability to defend the nation against foreign threats.

"You will leave with great pride ? lasting pride," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told the troops seated in front of a small domed building in the airport complex. "Secure in knowing that your sacrifice has helped the Iraqi people to begin a new chapter in history."

Many Iraqis, however, are uncertain of how that chapter will unfold. Their relief at the end of Saddam, who was hanged on the last day of 2006, was tempered by a long and vicious war that was launched to find non-existent weapons of mass destruction and nearly plunged the nation into full-scale sectarian civil war.

"With this withdrawal, the Americans are leaving behind a destroyed country," said Mariam Khazim, a Shiite whose father was killed when a mortar shell struck his home in Sadr City. "The Americans did not leave modern schools or big factories behind them. Instead, they left thousands of widows and orphans. The Americans did not leave a free people and country behind them, in fact they left a ruined country and a divided nation."

Some Iraqis celebrated the exit of what they called American occupiers, neither invited not welcome in a proud country.

"The American ceremony represents the failure of the U.S. occupation of Iraq due to the great resistance of the Iraqi people," said lawmaker Amir al-Kinani, a member of the political coalition loyal to anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Others said that while grateful for U.S. help ousting Saddam, the war went on too long. A majority of Americans would agree, according to opinion polls.

The low-key nature of the ceremony stood in sharp contrast to the high octane start of the war, which began before dawn on March 20, 2003, with an airstrike in southern Baghdad where Saddam was believed to be hiding. U.S. and allied ground forces then stormed across the featureless Kuwaiti desert, accompanied by reporters, photographers and television crews embedded with the troops.

The final few thousand U.S. troops will leave Iraq in orderly caravans and tightly scheduled flights.

The ceremony at Baghdad International Airport also featured remarks from Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. Lloyd Austin, the top U.S. commander in Iraq.

Austin led the massive logistical challenge of shuttering hundreds of bases and combat outposts, and methodically moving more than 50,000 U.S. troops and their equipment out of Iraq over the last year ? while still conducting training, security assistance and counterterrorism battles.

The war "tested our military's strength and our ability to adapt and evolve," he said, noting the development of the new counterinsurgency doctrine.

As of Thursday, there were two U.S. bases and about 4,000 U.S. troops in Iraq ? a dramatic drop from the roughly 500 military installations and as many as 170,000 troops during the surge ordered by President George W. Bush in 2007, when violence and raging sectarianism gripped the country. All U.S. troops are slated to be out of Iraq by the end of the year, but officials are likely to meet that goal a bit before then.

The total U.S. departure is a bit earlier than initially planned, and military leaders worry that it is a bit premature for the still maturing Iraqi security forces, who face continuing struggles to develop the logistics, air operations, surveillance and intelligence-sharing capabilities they will need in what has long been a difficult region.

Despite President Barack Obama's earlier contention that all American troops would be home for Christmas, at least 4,000 forces will remain in Kuwait for some months. The troops will be able to help finalize the move out of Iraq, but could also be used as a quick reaction force if needed.

Despite the war's toll and unpopularity, Panetta said earlier this week, it "has not been in vain."

During a stop in Afghanistan, Panetta described the Iraq mission as "making that country sovereign and independent and able to govern and secure itself."

That, he said, is "a tribute to everybody ? everybody who fought in that war, everybody who spilled blood in that war, everybody who was dedicated to making sure we could achieve that mission."

Iraqi citizens offered a more pessimistic assessment. "The Americans are leaving behind them a destroyed country," said Mariam Khazim of Sadr City. "The Americans did not leave modern schools or big factories behind them. Instead, they left thousands of widows and orphans."

The Iraq Body Count website says more than 100,000 Iraqis have been killed since the U.S. invasion. The vast majority were civilians.

Panetta echoed President Barack Obama's promise that the U.S. plans to keep a robust diplomatic presence in Iraq, foster a deep and lasting relationship with the nation and maintain a strong military force in the region.

U.S. officials were unable to reach an agreement with the Iraqis on legal issues and troop immunity that would have allowed a small training and counterterrorism force to remain. U.S. defense officials said they expect there will be no movement on that issue until sometime next year.

Obama met in Washington with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki earlier this week, vowing to remain committed to Iraq as the two countries struggle to define their new relationship. Ending the war was an early goal of the Obama administration, and Thursday's ceremony will allow the president to fulfill a crucial campaign promise during a politically opportune time. The 2012 presidential race is roiling and Republicans are in a ferocious battle to determine who will face off against Obama in the election.
