Recent Breast Cancer Study Giving New Hope To Doctors, Patients ...

CHICAGO (CBS) ? A recent breakthrough could change the way doctors treat breast cancer.

An analysis of the genetics of breast cancer has identified four distinct classes of the disease, and researchers hope the findings will lead to more effective treatments. The study, published Sunday in the journal Nature, also hinted that one type of the cancer could be treated with drugs already used in the treatment of ovarian cancer.

CBS 2?s Marissa Bailey spent the day with the Chicago doctor who had a part in the stunning new research.

Dr. Fumi Olapade, director of the cancer risk clinic at the University of Chicago, has been instrumental in the research, contributing samples directly from the university?s lab.

?We always thought breast cancer was one disease, and now we know it?s many different types of diseases,? Olapade said.

She was one of many authors of a new study out this week that categorizes breast cancer in four main forms.

Many are calling results groundbreaking, and say it will change the way doctors treat women going forward.

?For example, if a woman gets diagnosed with breast cancer, the first question that you ask is what type of breast cancer is it?? Olapade said. ?And now, every hospital can use a few markers to tell a woman what kind of breast cancer they have.?

The study also found one of the forms of breast cancer looks almost identical to ovarian cancer ? meaning drugs that treat and prevent ovarian cancer could help treat or prevent breast cancer.

For breast cancer patient Brandy Pinske, these results give her one more reason to fight.

She said the findings give her hope.

?For me, I don?t know, if they say 10 years, I?ll be here 10 years from now to get it. So that?s my attitude,? Pinske said.

While in 10 years, results might be different, Olapade said the new findings are a big step in the right direction.

?We will know how to pick the right drug, for the right patient, and at the right time,? she said.

Olapade said, right now, testing for one of the four forms of breast cancer costs thousands and thousands of dollars. The hope is that costs will come down, making it affordable for people to be tested.

The study was conducted by the international journal Nature, and was funded ? in part ? by federal stimulus money.

Apple Reportedly Recuiting Google Ex-Employees In Bid To Improve iOS 6 Maps App

Apple is actively recruiting Google staffers who worked on Google Maps in an effort to bulk up its own Maps app, according to TechCrunch.

TechCrunch?s source is a contractor who spent time working with Google?s Street View service. The contractor has reportedly seen many of his co-workers accept new jobs at Apple.

According to the TechCrunch source: ?Many of my co-workers at Google Maps eventually left when their contracts ended or on their own accord. One guy looked around for other [geographic information system] work and ended up at Apple when a recruiter contacted him. He had heard rumors for a while that Apple was going to develop its own in-house mapping platform, and given his experience at Google, he was an easy hire. Apple went out of their way to bring him down to Cupertino and he?s now paid hansomly [sic] as a GIS Analyst."

The source added: "Another co-worker that was a project lead at Google Maps, left for the East Coast after his contract ended, and was recently contacted by an Apple recruiter. The position sounds like a product development manager position, and will pay him $85k+ and all the moving expenses from the East Coast. He?s gone through 2 rounds of interview and seems like a frontrunner to land that position.?

The source continued: ?Apple has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to build a robust mapping platform to counter Google Maps, so it doesn?t surprise me that it?s going out of its way to lure former and current Google Maps employees. At Google Maps, we know what data?s important, rendering priorities, keyword searches, and how the user experience is supposed to be. However, Apple needs to find a way to get its own 5 million miles of street view data, partner with the right folks, and spend a fortune on licensed data -- which it can.?

If this rumor is true, then it could mean that Apple is seriously committed to improving its Maps app and is aware that its current state is flawed. Obviously, there?s no word on how soon the Google ex-employees would

North Carolina has sent information to the NCAA about the hiring of the mother of former UNC basketball star Tyler Hansbrough as a fundraiser and her travels.

By Bob Donnan, US Presswire

North Carolina has sent information to the NCAA about the hiring of the mother of former UNC basketball star Tyler Hansbrough as a fundraiser and her travels.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina has provided information to the NCAA about the hiring of the mother of former basketball star Tyler Hansbrough as a fundraiser and her travels.

In documents faxed to the NCAA on Sept. 13, the school included summaries of Tami Hansbrough's trips in March 2009 that coincided with her son's games in the Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA tournaments.

The school said then-athletic director Dick Baddour and assistant athletic director for compliance Amy Herman reviewed the trips and determined no violations took place. Athletic spokesman Steve Kirschner said Saturday the fax was meant to brief the NCAA following media reports and the school isn't reporting a violation.

Hansbrough raised about $5 million for the dental school foundation before moving to another university fundraising job in 2011. She resigned this month after questions arose about spending on trips she took with top UNC fundraiser Matt Kupec, who also has resigned.

Those trips included destinations where her younger son, Ben, was playing basketball for Notre Dame.

Hansbrough's trips to Atlanta and Memphis, Tenn., during Tyler's senior season were later approved as legitimate because she reported meeting with potential donors as the Tar Heels went on to win the NCAA championship.

In a cover letter to NCAA assistant director for enforcement Mike Zonder, UNC general counsel Leslie Strohm wrote that Hansbrough was selected for the dental school foundation job in 2008 by a five-member search committee from a pool of 41 candidates.

She was chosen for the university fundraising job by a six-member search committee from a pool of 38 candidates, according to Strohm's letter.

There are lots of great resources available no matter what kind of ...

Consider starting a compost bin for your leftover produce scraps. There are several simple methods available and you will be helping the environment. At the same time, you are creating fabulous nutrient rich fertilizer. Compost fertilizer can be used for your flowers and shrubs in addition to being the perfect choice for your new fruits and vegetables.

When choosing who to help you with a home improvement project you will need to figure out what type of help you need. A tradesperson can help with specific upgrades like replacing a furnace or moving ductwork. A specialty contractor can work on your kitchen or your bathroom, but typically not both. A renovator or general contractor can cover more than one project at one time.

Paint your doors. If you have old, outdated hollow core doors in your home, those can easily be painted to make them brighter and looking newer. Simply take them off the hinges, throw them over a couple of saw horses outside, and give them a quick coat of primer first and then your choice of paint color.

Painting home improvement projects require dry days. This tip is critical for having success in painting your home. On wet and humid afternoons, paint dries more slowly on the walls, which means that you will be at your project longer. Only painting on the dry days will cut your time in between coats and speed up the project overall.

Cover all surfaces appropriately before starting an improvement project. If you are tearing down walls or kitchen cupboards, cover any surfaces that have a finish that might get scratched, including floors and nearby walls. If you are painting, make sure to use a dropcloth on the floor and painter?s tape with paper coverings for features such as doorknobs and light switch face plates.

Even the simplest home improvement projects can seem overwhelming at first if you don?t have a good grasp of the basics. Once you know what you?re doing, though, any project is manageable. Just apply what you?ve learned from this article, and before you know it, you?ll be one step closer to turning your house into your dream home.

Epigenetics: Mother's nutrition -- before pregnancy -- may alter function of her children's genes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 20, 2012) ? Everyone knows that what mom eats when pregnant makes a huge difference in the health of her child. Now, new research in mice suggests that what she ate before pregnancy might be important too. According to a new research report published online in The FASEB Journal, what a group of female mice ate -- before pregnancy -- chemically altered their DNA and these changes were passed to her offspring. These DNA alterations, called "epigenetic" changes, drastically affected the pups' metabolism of many essential fatty acids.

These results could have a profound impact on future research for diabetes, obesity, cancer, and immune disorders.

"As parents, we have to understand better that our responsibilities to our children are not only of a social, economical, or educational nature, but that our own biological status can contribute to the fate of our children, and this effect can be long-lasting," said Mihai Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., study author from Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, N.C. "My hope is that, along with many other scientists, we will reveal this tight biological relationship between us as parents, and our children, and how we can improve the lives of our children using our own biological machinery."

To make this discovery, Niculescu and colleagues split mouse females into two groups before gestation, and fed them either a control diet, or a diet deficient in alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. This was achieved by replacing the type of fats in the diet, while keeping the number of calories the same. The females were bred with mouse males kept on a control diet. Immediately after the moms delivered the pups, each of these two initial groups were further split in two, so that each half of the initial groups received a flaxseed oil supplemented diet (rich in ALA), while the other halves from each group remained on the same diet.

Researchers used blood and liver to look at polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and the DNA methylation of a gene called Fads2, which regulates PUFA metabolism. They found that in both the moms and pups, flaxseed oil induced a change in this chemical modification in the Fads2 gene. Flaxseed oil supplementation increased the methylation of this gene, which, in turn, decreased the activation of the gene in pups. However, flaxseed oil was not the only factor with impact upon Fads2 methylation in pups. Results demonstrated that regardless of the flaxseed oil intake, there was a correlation between the methylation of this gene in moms and in their pups, which suggested that pups also inherit this methylation from their moms. The pups' ability to transform PUFAs in their own livers was influenced by both the mother's dietary intake, and also by maternal Fads2 methylation status.

"New York City may be laughed at by some for banning large, sugary sodas and for encouraging a healthy diet," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "This report shows that future generations might not find that funny at all. This report adds to the large body of evidence that an inappropriate diet can produce changes in the function of our DNA and the DNA of our children -- a process called epigenetics. As we begin understand the effects of diet on epigenetics, New York may go from being considered a funny 'nanny-state' to becoming appreciated as a public health visionary."

Pakistan 'Day of Love' protests over film turn deadly

Hundreds protest against an anti-Islam film in Pakistan by setting a cinema on fire on a day the Pakistani government has called for peaceful demonstrations. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan --?Protests by tens of thousands of Pakistanis infuriated by an anti-Islam film descended into deadly violence on Friday, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to subdue rioters who hurled rocks and set fire to buildings in some cities.

NBC News reported that 12 people died in Karachi with another three dead in Peshawar during the protests. More than 100 people were injured.

Friday had been declared a national holiday by Pakistan's government so people could rally against the video.

There were also protests in at least half a dozen other countries, with American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama burned.

Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was the first to die in Pakistan.

He was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time.

The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots.?Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.

In Karachi, armed protesters among a group of 15,000 fired on police, killing one and wounding another, police officer Ahmad Hassan said. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.?

The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days.?A United Nations official said prior to Friday's deaths that about 30 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had been killed in the violence.

Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Western diplomatic missions throughout the Muslim world tightened security, with some closing down on expectation of big protests after Friday prayers.?Cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine on Wednesday were expected to compound the anger.

French officials have ordered extra security around the country and at its embassies around the world after a satirical magazine published cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. ?NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Paris.

Pakistan's government had encouraged people to protest peacefully Friday, which it described as the "Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad."

"An attack upon the Holy Prophet is an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims. Therefore, this is something unacceptable," Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a speech to politicians and religious leaders.

Akbar Saeed Farooqi, spokesman for a religious organization that helped organize demonstrations, said, "our heart is crying bloody tears. We can bear everything but disrespect to our Prophet and Quran," he added.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Several hundred protesters ransacked the two cinemas in Peshawar and set them ablaze.?A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.

Analysis: 'Manufactured outrage' behind Muslim protests

On Thursday in Islamabad, about 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had clashed with police as they tried to force their way to the U.S. Embassy.

At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan has been running television advertisements, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film.

Protests in the Muslim world
Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.

In Indonesia, which has?the world's biggest Muslim population,?the U.S. and French embassies were closed in Jakarta Friday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".

Diplomatic missions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, were on lockdown.

Police in Kabul said they had been in contact with religious and community leaders to try to prevent violence.

"There are some angry demonstrators who will encourage people to violence," senior police officer Mohammad Zahir told Reuters. "There will also be Taliban influence in demonstrations too and they may attack the U.S. and other embassies."

Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

Pakistan added to growing no-go list for Americans

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran.

Arshad Arbab / EPA

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

In Yemen, Western embassies in the capital Sanaa tightened security, fearing the cartoons could lead to more unrest after crowds attacked the U.S. mission there last week over the anti-Islam film.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons.?

An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross."

In a statement before her meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem, Clinton said she and the president are continuing to monitor events around the world closely in the wake of the attacks and protests on American diplomatic posts.

"We've taken a number of steps around the world to augment security and to protect our personnel at diplomatic posts," Clinton said.? In Tunisia, where the embassy and an American school were damaged, Clinton said the government is helping secure the locations and she stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the assault to justice.

/

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

About 10,000 Islamists gathered in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, after Friday prayers, chanting slogans and burning U.S. and French flags and an effigy of Obama.

In Libya, where militias that helped overthrow Moammar Gadhafi still wield much power, the foreign minister offered a further apology for U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens' death to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns on Thursday.

Around 30,000 Libyans marched through the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in an unprecedented protest to demand the disbanding of powerful militias in the wake of last week's attack.

NBC News' Fakhar Rehman, Catherine Chomiak and Andy Eckardt,?The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

In protests, Mao holds subtle messages for Beijing

BEIJING (AP) ? Revolutionary leader Mao Zedong was the rallying icon of nationalism in the latest round of anti-Japanese protests in China. But he also provided a safe cover for criticism.

Some protesters say the portraits of Mao they carried were intended to contrast with today's China. They say the government appears "spineless" in its dispute with Japan over some islands in East China Sea.

A recent purchase by Tokyo of the islands has stirred up anti-Japanese sentiments among Chinese and set off protests across the country.

Beneath the scenes of the protests ran an undercurrent of grievances. Protesters held up signs on broader social issues such as lack of free speech, corruption, food safety, income inequality, and even the brutality of city code enforcers.

Ex-priest sues Catholic church to clear his name

By Jonathan Dienst and Joe Valiquette, NBCNewYork.com

A one-time leading Bronx priest is suing the Archdiocese of New York for libel, claiming the sex abuse allegations he once faced are false, and that church officials knew it when they repeated them in a public news release.?

In his court filing, Charles Kavanaugh says his chief accuser recanted allegations he made in 2002 that Kavanaugh molested him when he was a teen during a church trip to Washington, D.C.?"The statement was not true and I apologize for it," one-time accuser Daniel Donohue wrote in a sworn statement submitted in federal court. ? ???

Donohue had claimed Kavanaugh jumped into his bed in the D.C.-area hotel room and rubbed against him. Donohue also said that when Kavanaugh held his hands during prayer, it made him uncomfortable. ??

"The pointed finger has come back. He has withdrawn the only allegation against Monsignor Kavanaugh," said Kavanaugh?s attorney John Dearie. ??

For more, visit NBCNewYork.com

For 10 years, Kavanaugh fought to clear his name. He originally filed a lawsuit against Donohue, but dropped it after Donohue admitted his story about what ?happened 30 years ago was false.?Kavanaugh was convicted at a church trial.

In May, Catholic church spokesman Joseph Zwilling said in a news release that Kavanaugh deserved to be kicked out of the church because there were "multiple counts" of sexual abuse.?

"That is a flat-out lie. There are not multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor," said Kavanaugh?s sister and attorney Ann Mandt. "And that?s why we sued them. Because it is a lie."?Zwilling said Wednesday that church attorneys are now reviewing the defamation lawsuit. ??

"I stand by the truthfulness and accuracy of my May 1, 2012, statement," he said.?Kavanaugh had been Vicar of Development for the Catholic Church in New York and served for more than 40 years as a priest. His last post was head of St. Raymond?s Church in the Bronx before he was kicked out and convicted in a secret church trial.?

For the last decade, Kavanaugh has called allegations against him "false" and repeatedly has demanded a "full and fair hearing" in public. His attorneys say they in part blame former Cardinal Egan, who they said was under scrutiny for allegations he mishandled abuse charges by other priests when he led the church in Connecticut.?

Kavanaugh lost his job, his home and his pension and now counts on friends help and support in Florida where he now lives.?His one-time accuser Donohue did not return calls for comment. ??

Kavanaugh?s lawsuit seeks damages against the Archdiocese and Zwilling, as well as the "Catholic New York" publication and its editor, which published Zwilling?s comments.?

"We have evidence that this man is innocent. The accuser admitted it," said Mandt. "We?re not asking for the benefit of the doubt ? we?re asking for justice. Give an innocent man justice."?Kavanaugh?s attorneys claim after a decade of being falsely scorned, he still wants his old job back.

Fake gold bars found in Manhattan

In tough times, gold is held up as the shining path toward financial stability. Stash your gold bars in the basement, and watch the banks collapse.

But beware, all that glitters may not be gold:? A few fake bars have been discovered in midtown Manhattan's jewelry stores, Fox 5 News reports.

It started when Ibrahim Fadl bought a gold bar for nearly $18,000? from a merchant who had sold him real gold in the past. But he had heard there were fakes going around. So he drilled into some of his 10-ounce bars--valued at $100,000--and found gray tungsten instead.

"I really got sick. It's a big amount of money and I could not believe that somebody was so professional and clever, it's perfect," Fadl said.

Here's why even the reputable merchant got fooled, as explained by Fox:

What makes it so devious is a real gold bar is purchased with the serial numbers and papers, then it is hollowed out, the gold is sold, the tungsten is put in, then the bar is closed up. That is a sophisticated operation.

The sophisticated operation may be global in scope: Gold bars filled with tungsten showed up in England earlier this year. The Secret Service is investigating the counterfeits in New York.

So the next time you go to pick up some gold bars, you may want to bring along your drill.

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory electronics science and technology engineers demonstrate the ability of single walled carbon nanotube transistors (SWCNTs) to survive the harsh space environment, investigating the effects of ionizing radiation on the crystalline structures and further supporting the development of SWCNT-based nanoelectronics for use in harsh radiation environments.

"One of the primary challenges for space electronics is mitigating the susceptibility of prolonged exposure to radiation that exists in the charged particle belts that encircle Earth," said Cory Cress, materials research engineer. "These are the first controlled demonstrations showing little performance degradation and high tolerance to cumulative ionizing radiation exposure."

Radiation effects take two forms, transient effects and cumulative effects. The former, referred to as single effect transients (SETs), result from a direct strike by an ionizing particle in space that causes a current pulse in the device. If this pulse propagates through the circuit it can cause data corruption that can be extremely detrimental to someone that relies on that signal, such as a person using GPS for navigation. NRL researchers have recently predicted that such effects are nearly eliminated for SWCNT-based nanoelectronics due to their small size, low density, and inherent isolation from neighboring SWCNTs in a device.

The cumulative effects in traditional electronics results from trapped charges in the oxides of the devices, including the gate oxide and those used to isolate adjacent devices, the latter being primary source of radiation-induced performance degradation in state-of-the-art complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices. The effect is manifested as a shift in the voltage needed to turn the transistor on or off. This initially results in power leakage, but can eventually cause failure of the entire circuit.

By developing a SWCNT structure with a thin gate oxide made from thin silicon oxynitride, NRL researchers recently demonstrated SWCNT transistors that do not suffer from such radiation-induced performance changes. This hardened dielectric material and naturally isolated one-dimensional SWCNT structure makes them extremely radiation tolerant.

The ability for SWCNT-based transistors to be both tolerant to transient and cumulative effects potentially enables future space electronics with less redundancy and error-correction circuitry, while maintaining the same quality of fidelity. This reduction in overhead alone would greatly reduce power and improve performance over existing space-electronic systems even if the SWCNT-based transistors operate at the same speed as current technologies. Even greater benefits are foreseeable in the future, once devices are developed that exceed the performance of silicon-based transistors.

As US troop 'surge' ends, setbacks are piling up

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The end game in Afghanistan is off to a shaky start.

Just as the last U.S. "surge" troops leave the country, trouble is breaking out in ways that go to the core of the strategy for winding down the U.S. and allied combat role and making Afghans responsible for their own security. At stake is the goal of ensuring that Afghanistan does not revert to being a terrorist haven.

Nearly two years after President Barack Obama announced that he was sending another 33,000 troops to take on the Taliban, those reinforcements are completing their return to the United States this week. That leaves about 68,000 American troops, along with their NATO allies and Afghan partners, to carry out an ambitious plan to put the Afghans fully in the combat lead as early as next year.

But the setbacks are piling up: a spasm of deadly attacks on U.S. and NATO forces by Afghan soldiers and police, including three attacks in the last three days; an audacious Taliban assault on a coalition air base that killed two Marines and destroyed six fighter jets; and a NATO airstrike that inadvertently killed eight Afghan women and girls.

The Pentagon on Monday identified the two Marines killed at Camp Bastion on Friday as Lt. Col. Christopher K. Raible, 40, of Huntingdon, Pa., and Sgt. Bradley W. Atwell, 27, of Kokomo, Ind. Raible was commander of the Harrier squadron that had six of its planes destroyed in the assault.

On Tuesday, the international military coalition in Kabul said that a Taliban "leader" behind the Bastion assault was arrested by Afghan and coalition forces in the district of Helmand province where the base is situated. Without providing details, it said the person is suspected of having provided support to the attackers. Officials had previously said that one of the attackers was captured alive; the rest were killed.

Tensions over the anti-Islam movie produced in the U.S. that ridicules the Prophet Mohammad also spread to Kabul, where demonstrations turned violent Monday when protesters burned cars and threw rocks at a U.S. military base. Early Tuesday, a suicide bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into a minibus carrying foreign aviation workers to the airport in the Afghan capital, killing at least nine people in an attack a militant group said was revenge for the film.

Those events help the Taliban's aim of driving a wedge between the Americans and their Afghan partners. They also show that the Taliban, while weakened, remains a force to be reckoned with, 11 years after the first U.S. troops arrived to drive the Taliban out.

The extra troops began moving into Afghanistan in early 2010, pushing the total U.S. force to a peak of 101,000 by mid-2011.

The U.S. troop surge was supposed to put so much military pressure on the Taliban that its leaders ? most of whom are in Pakistan ? would feel compelled to come to the peace table. That hasn't happened. Preliminary contacts began, but have been stymied.

When he announced his decision in December 2009 to send the 33,000 extra troops, Obama said it was aimed at seizing the initiative in a war that was "not lost, but for several years ... has moved backwards."

Battlefield momentum was regained but doubts persist about how long-lasting the progress will prove to be.

Stephen Biddle, a professor of international affairs at George Washington University and an occasional consultant to U.S. commanders in Afghanistan, said Monday he's grown more pessimistic about the handoff of security duties to the Afghans in 2014.

"It looks like what we're going to be handing off is a stalemated war," he said in a telephone interview Monday, "which means the U.S. Congress will be asked to write these checks (to support Afghan forces) for years and years and years with no plausible argument that we're going to bring this to a successful conclusion, at least on the battlefield."

Troubling is piling up so rapidly that some analysts wonder where it will lead.

"We've had this series of unfortunate events, the grand total of which it's really hard to read in any remotely positive manner," said Douglas Ollivant, a former Army officer who served in Iraq during the 2007-08 American troop surge and in 2010-11 was the senior counterinsurgency adviser to the U.S. commander of the eastern sector of Afghanistan. He is now a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, a think tank.

Worries about Afghan soldiers and police turning their guns on their U.S. and allied partners have reached the point where Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander there, directed lower-level commanders on Sunday to review security protections and to limit some partnered operations with the Afghans temporarily.

And it prompted Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to say Sunday that insider attacks have become a "very serious threat" to the war campaign. "Something has to change," he declared. He also suggested that the Afghan government needs to be more aggressive about making those changes.

But Defense Secretary Leon Panetta struck a different tone, saying Tuesday the attacks do not mean the Taliban is succeeding. Instead, he said the Taliban is "resorting to efforts that try to strike at our force, try to create chaos, but do not in any way result in their regaining territory that has been lost." Whatever the connection between these attacks, which so far this year have killed 51 allied troops, and the Taliban, they were not a problem when the surge began.

In just the past three days there have been at least three insider attacks, killing two British and four American troops. The third attack, on Monday, wounded at least one civilian contractor but resulted in no fatalities.

Obama also directed that the reinforcements start coming home by July 2011, and he ordered that all return by this month.

U.S. and coalition officials say the overall war plan remains on track, with Afghan forces taking more of a lead role in fighting the Taliban insurgency over the next two years. The combat role for international forces is scheduled to end in December 2014, although some thousands of troops are to remain in various support roles.

Often forgotten is that U.S. troop levels increased more in Obama's first year in office ? from about 32,000 to about 68,000 ? than during the surge. Portions of those early increases were leftover requests from U.S. commanders for reinforcements that President George W. Bush did not act on before leaving office.
